The dress watch: size, style and when to wear one.

A dress watch is slim, modest in size and simple: typically 36 to 40 mm, under about 10 mm thick, with a clean dial and a leather strap that slips under a shirt cuff. It should complement formal clothes rather than compete with them.

What makes a watch a dress watch.

  • Thin case: the defining trait. It should slide under a cuff without catching.
  • Modest diameter: 36 to 40 mm for most people.
  • Simple dial: hours and minutes, perhaps small seconds or a date. Applied indices or Roman numerals.
  • Restrained finish: polished steel, gold or gold-tone; a white, cream, silver, blue or black dial.
  • Strap: slim leather is traditional; a fine bracelet works too.

How to wear one.

Traditionally, a leather strap matches your shoes and belt, so black with black shoes and brown with brown. That rule is relaxed now, but it still looks considered. Wear the watch where it shows briefly as you move, rather than over the cuff. A dive watch with a suit is common today; a dress watch with a suit is simply more elegant.

Mechanical or quartz?

Both are correct. Many classic dress watches are manual-wind because the movement can be very thin. Quartz and solar dress watches are thinner still and always ready, which suits a watch worn occasionally. Movement types explained.

Our approach to choosing one.

Start with thickness, then size, then dial. Try to see it under a shirt cuff. Tissot Le Locle vs Gentleman compares a pure dress watch with a more versatile one.

A few good questions.

What size should a dress watch be?

Typically 36 to 40 mm across and under about 10 mm thick, so it slips under a shirt cuff.

Can a dress watch be quartz?

Yes. Quartz and solar dress watches are thin, accurate and always ready, which suits occasional wear.

Should my watch strap match my shoes?

Traditionally, yes: black strap with black shoes, brown with brown. It is a guideline that still looks considered with formal clothes.
