How to choose a dive watch: what actually matters.

Look for at least 200 m of water resistance, a unidirectional rotating bezel, a screw-down crown, strong lume and a strap that can get wet. ISO 6425 certification is a bonus for serious divers. For most people, a dive watch is a tough everyday watch, so size and comfort matter as much as depth.

The essentials.

  • Water resistance: 200 m is the practical standard; 100 m is fine for swimming. Ratings explained.
  • Unidirectional bezel: rotates one way only, so a knock can only shorten a timed dive, never lengthen it. Most click in 60 or 120 steps per turn.
  • Screw-down crown: seals the main entry point for water.
  • Lume: bright, evenly applied lume on hands, markers and the bezel pip.
  • Strap: rubber, FKM, a bracelet or a NATO; never leather for water.

Nice to have.

  • ISO 6425 certification: tested to the international dive watch standard and marked “Diver’s”.
  • Sapphire crystal: resists scratches from rocks and boat decks.
  • A dive extension on the clasp: lets the bracelet fit over a wetsuit.
  • Helium escape valve: only relevant for professional saturation divers; ignore it otherwise.

Size matters more than depth.

Dive watches often run large: 42 to 44 mm and 13 mm thick are common. If you will wear it daily, a 38 to 40 mm diver with a short lug-to-lug is far easier to live with. Thinner cases also slide under a cuff. What size watch should I wear?

Automatic, solar or quartz?

Automatic divers are the classic choice and run without batteries. Solar divers, such as Citizen’s Eco-Drive models, never need winding or battery changes and are ideal for a holiday or sports watch. Quartz is the most accurate and cheapest. Citizen Promaster Dive vs BODERRY Admiral.

Dive watches we recommend.

A few good questions.

What water resistance do I need for a dive watch?

200 m is the practical standard for recreational diving. A watch marked “Diver’s” under ISO 6425 must be rated to at least 100 m and pass additional tests.

Why do dive watches have a rotating bezel?

To time a dive. Align the zero marker with the minute hand at the start and read elapsed time directly. A unidirectional bezel can only shorten, never extend, the timed period if knocked.

Can I wear a dive watch every day?

Yes. Most dive watches are worn as tough everyday watches. Choose a size and thickness you find comfortable.
