Automatic or quartz? Start with your routine.

Choose quartz if you want low-maintenance convenience. Choose automatic if the appeal of a mechanical movement is part of why you want a watch. Neither choice requires a collector’s permission.

What an automatic asks of you.

An automatic movement stores energy in a mainspring, usually wound by a rotor as you move. If it sits unworn past its power reserve, it stops and needs winding and setting. That small interaction can be part of the pleasure of ownership.

Where quartz makes life easier.

A conventional quartz movement uses a battery and a quartz oscillator. It is a practical choice when you rotate watches or want a watch you can pick up without resetting after a few days. Battery and service requirements vary by model.

Buy for the way you live.

Start with design, legibility, proportions, and a maintenance routine you will actually follow. If you enjoy the mechanism, choose a mechanical watch. If convenience matters most, include quartz in your search.
